Javier Bereche, president of the Piura Chamber of Commerce indicated that beach tourism in the region is working at 80%, which marks a recovery compared to August (45%) and July (25%). Even for the next holidays, holidays or the beginning of summer there are already several sold out accommodations.

“This is good news, considering that in Piura and Tumbes 40% of the flow of tourism is Ecuadorian. However, [by remaining closed land borders] it has been possible to cover this beach hotel offer with Peruvian tourists who seek remote areas with little influx of public, ”said Bereche.

At the beginning, the most sought after were the rentals of beach houses, bungalows and condominiums, but little by little the hotels have been recovering ground. The union leader said that they estimate to increase that 80% as the summer progresses.

Piura has one million 850 thousand inhabitants, of the 770 thousand people who live in the city, 130 thousand (between 18 and 64 years old) carry out regional tourism. The population of this Piuran flow is moving over 95% to the beaches, Bereche indicated. He added that the region moved around S / 50 million from tourism before the pandemic.

Likewise, many people from Lima, as well as Lambayeque, Trujillo, Cajamarca and Tumbes are arriving at Piura's spas. Unlike beach tourism, urban tourism, such as hotels and gastronomy in the city, has only managed to reopen 40%. And the ones that have reopened are not filled as before.

NEW YEAR AT 80% IN MÁNCORA
The Arennas Máncora hotel, the luxury complex of the Los Portales Hotels chain, has felt the recovery of tourism. In September they reached 45% occupancy, and for October they plan to close with 60%. By December, meanwhile, they estimate to reach 80% of their 24 rooms.

"We are already with 30% occupancy purchased for December, and in New Year we are at 80% occupancy, we only have four rooms left," explained Vanesa Villagrán, director of sales for the hotel chain.

Part of this recovery has to do with the Bureau Veritas and Safe Travels certifications that the chain has. "This has been an important point since the internal tourist, which is what we have now, seeks to have security."

Regarding the habits of the guests, Villagrán commented that they are now looking more for rooms with sea view, which have a pool. Even so, most prefer to go to the beach. They mainly receive passengers from Lima, but also from Trujillo and Chiclayo. He highlighted that 70% of passengers arrive in private cars.

NEW IDEAS
In order to help recover the tourism sector, which is one of the hardest hit by the pandemic -especially the gastronomic, hotel and artisan sector-, the Piura Chamber of Commerce proposed to relaunch the website And you what plans ?.

“We need it to function as a marketing tool, where the Peruvian can have information about Peruvian tourist spots, with a payment gateway, shopping cart and delivery. Even with that same tourism marketplace, some tax promotions can be generated so that savings can be transferred to the same tourist, and thus promote regional tourism, ”said Bereche.

This was proposed in a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Labor last Thursday.
